About Tangail

Tangail stretches from the Jamuna in the west to the Madhupur tract in the east, north-west of Dhaka. It is the largest district in Dhaka Division by area and, with about 4.04 million people in the 2022 census, one of the most populous in the country. Its 12 upazilas are Tangail Sadar, Basail, Bhuapur, Delduar, Dhanbari, Ghatail, Gopalpur, Kalihati, Madhupur, Mirzapur, Nagarpur and Sakhipur.

The west is low, river-built land along the Jamuna, the Dhaleshwari and the Louhajang, which flows past Tangail town; in the monsoon chars and floodplains fill with water. The east rises onto the red-soil Madhupur tract, where the remaining sal forest of Madhupur National Park shelters Garo and Koch villages and pineapple and banana plantations spread across the hills.

The Jamuna Bridge at Bhuapur, nearly 5 km long, links Tangail to Sirajganj and the north-west, making the district a major crossroads between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh.

History

Under the Bengal sultans and Mughals the area formed part of the Atia pargana, and the Atia Mosque of 1609 survives from that era. Zamindars shaped much of the district's later history, among them the Panni family of Karatia, the Nawabs of Dhanbari and the zamindars of Mohera, whose palaces still stand. Tangail was a subdivision of Mymensingh from 1870 and became a separate district on 1 December 1969.

The district produced influential figures: Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, the peasant leader who lived and is buried at Santosh; Wazed Ali Khan Panni, who founded Saadat College; and the philanthropist Ranada Prasad Saha, who founded Kumudini Hospital and Bharateshwari Homes at Mirzapur. During 1971 the Kaderia Bahini, a large local force of freedom fighters, fought across Tangail.

Economy and livelihoods

Handloom weaving is Tangail's most famous industry, centred on Pathrail, Delduar, Kalihati and Nagarpur, where weavers produce the light cotton and silk Tangail saree with fine extra-weft borders. Agriculture is the other pillar: Madhupur and Ghatail grow pineapples, bananas, jackfruit, ginger and turmeric, and the western floodplains produce rice, jute, mustard and vegetables. Porabari and Tangail town are known for sweets, and the district also has rice mills, a growing number of factories near Mirzapur and Kalihati, and many families supported by remittances.

Food, culture and festivals

Porabari chamcham, a dense, juicy sweet from the village of Porabari on the Dhaleshwari, is one of the best-known sweets in Bangladesh. Garo communities in Madhupur celebrate Wangala, their harvest festival, with music and dance. Folk forms such as jari, sari, bhatiali, baul and kabigan are performed at fairs, and boat races are held on the rivers after the monsoon.

Tangail's weaving villages keep their own rhythm, with the sound of shuttles from early morning and weekly saree haats that draw traders from across the country.
