Himsagar mango (Meherpur, Satkhira)

The early, fibreless mango of the southwest; Meherpur's Himsagar became a GI in 2025

Himsagar is the smooth, fibreless, fragrant mango that opens the season in Satkhira, Meherpur and Chuadanga, often a week or more ahead of Rajshahi. Meherpur's Himsagar received its GI certificate in December 2025. Expect it from mid-May to late June.

The story

Mango season in Bangladesh begins in the southwest. The hotter, drier spring in Satkhira, Meherpur and Chuadanga ripens fruit earlier than in the Rajshahi belt, and Himsagar is the variety that makes those districts famous. Satkhira usually lets Himsagar be picked from the middle or third week of May, and Meherpur a few days later, so city buyers often taste their first good mango of the year from this region. Meherpur's orchards, including the old mango gardens around Amjhupi, produce Himsagar in large volumes, and Satkhira's growers have been part of the government's export programmes.

Meherpur's district agriculture office applied for a GI in July 2024, and "Meherpur's Himsagar mango" was among seven products certified by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks in December 2025, alongside the district's Sabitri sweet. Satkhira's and Chuadanga's Himsagar are just as well known in the market but are not covered by that certificate, so a GI claim on Himsagar should specifically mean Meherpur. Across the border, West Bengal registered Himsagar as an Indian GI years earlier; the same mango grows in Nadia, Murshidabad and Malda.

Then there is the question of names. Many traders, and many experts, regard Himsagar and Chapainawabganj's Khirsapat as the same variety or nearly so, and the two names are often used for the same fruit; Rajshahi's harvest calendar lists them together. Others point to small differences, saying Himsagar tends to stay greener and Khirsapat is slightly broader at the stalk. In practice, judge the fruit in front of you rather than the label, and ask where it was grown.

How to spot the real Himsagar mango (Meherpur, Satkhira)

A good Himsagar is medium-sized, around 250 to 350 grams, oval and plump with a smooth skin. When ripe the skin is greenish-yellow, sometimes turning a fuller yellow as it softens, so a mango that is green but fragrant may be perfectly ready. Cut it and the flesh should be bright yellow to light orange, entirely fibreless, very juicy and sweet with a rich scent, and the edible part is large compared with the thin stone. Watery, bland flesh or a sour patch near the stone usually means early picking. Himsagar sold in April, or very cheap "Himsagar" in the first days of May, deserves suspicion even from Satkhira.

Buying tips

Follow the local calendars. In recent years Satkhira has opened Himsagar picking around 15 to 22 May and Meherpur shortly after, while Rajshahi lists Himsagar and Khirsapat from about 30 May. Prices are usually highest in the first days and ease as volume rises. Size, sorting, packing and courier distance all affect what you pay, and fruit going from Satkhira to Sylhet travels much further than fruit going to Khulna.

If you want Meherpur's GI Himsagar specifically, ask the seller which upazila the orchard is in and say so in your order. Each Midmart shop sets its own delivery charge, so mixing a Satkhira seller and a Chapainawabganj seller in one order means two charges. Midmart never takes payment or carries goods; the seller agrees payment and shipping with you directly. Ask when the batch was picked, how it is packed and how many days the courier will take, and avoid fruit that will spend more than two or three days in transit in May heat.

Keeping it fresh

Unpack Himsagar immediately and lay the fruit out in a single layer in a cool, airy room. It ripens within a few days and keeps reasonably well, but once soft and fragrant it should be eaten within a day or two or moved to the fridge. Keep ripe mangoes away from strong-smelling foods in the fridge, and cut them only when you are ready to eat. Himsagar pulp freezes well for later use.
