Rajshahi mango

How to buy real mangoes from the Rajshahi belt, and what the harvest calendar means

"Rajshahi mango" means the fruit of Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon, Bangladesh's main mango belt. The name itself is not a GI; individual varieties are. A government harvest calendar sets when each variety may be picked, from mid-May to August.

The story

For most Bangladeshis, "Rajshahi mango" is shorthand for good mango. The phrase covers a belt of orchards across Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon, with Natore close by, where the soil and the hot, dry summers suit the tree better than almost anywhere else in the country. Kansat bazar in Chapainawabganj and Baneshwar in Rajshahi's Puthia upazila are among the biggest wholesale mango markets, and from May to August trucks and special mango trains carry the crop to Dhaka and beyond.

There is no GI for "Rajshahi mango" as such. Protection belongs to individual varieties: Chapainawabganj's Khirsapat (2019), the Fazli shared by Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj (2023), Chapainawabganj's Langra and Ashwina (2023), and Naogaon's Nak Fazli (2025). Outside the belt, Rangpur's Haribhanga and Meherpur's Himsagar have their own GIs. So when a seller says "GI Rajshahi mango", ask which variety and which district they mean.

To keep immature fruit off the market, the Rajshahi district administration and the Department of Agricultural Extension publish a mango calendar each spring. In the 2025 and 2026 seasons Rajshahi's dates were close to these: local guti mangoes from 15 May, Gopalbhog from 22 May, Ranipasand and Laxmanbhog from 25 May, Himsagar and Khirsapat from 30 May, Langra from 10 June, Amrapali and Fazli from 15 June, BARI Aam-4 from 5 July, Ashwina from 10 July and Gourmoti from 15 July, with Katimon allowed year-round. Chapainawabganj and Naogaon sometimes set their own dates, and some years Chapainawabganj has let growers pick when fruit is naturally mature instead. Dates are reviewed every year, so check the current one.

How to spot the real Rajshahi mango

Start with the calendar: a named variety offered well before its date was picked immature or is not what it claims. Then look at the fruit. Naturally ripened mangoes change colour gradually from the stalk end, smell sweet at the stalk and soften evenly; several varieties, including Langra, Fazli and Himsagar, stay largely green when ripe. Fruit ripened with calcium carbide, which is banned, often looks evenly bright yellow while the flesh near the stone is still hard and sour, and the aroma is weak. On formalin, the evidence is reassuring: government scientists at BCSIR found that the meters once used in raids were built to test air, not fruit, formalin does not preserve low-protein fruit like mango, and BSTI testing of seasonal fruit found none. Fruit naturally contains traces of formaldehyde, so a "formalin-free" label proves nothing. The real risks are early picking and forced ripening.

Buying tips

Ask the seller for the variety, the upazila and the picking date, not just "Rajshahi". Fruit from Satkhira or other districts is sometimes sold under the Rajshahi name early in the season, which is not harmful in itself but matters if you are paying for origin. Price depends on variety, the week of the season, size grade, sorting, crate or carton packing and courier distance.

Midmart lists sellers; it is not one. Each shop sets its own delivery charge, so an order of Langra from one orchard and Fazli from another is two parcels with two charges. Midmart does not take payment or move parcels: you and the seller agree payment and courier between you. Before confirming, ask how the fruit is packed, how long delivery takes, and what happens if mangoes arrive crushed or rotten.

Keeping it fresh

Open boxes on arrival, remove damaged fruit and spread the rest in one layer in a cool, airy place, never in sealed plastic. Most mangoes finish ripening in two to five days; eat them when fragrant or refrigerate them. Thin-skinned Langra spoils fastest, while Fazli and Ashwina keep longer. Surplus pulp freezes well, and slightly underripe fruit makes good pickle or amshotto.
